So I watched a documentary on the NFB of Canada site last night about Marilyn Waring. She explained how GDP is measured and it brought into clarity why the whole system is as fucked up as it is. The environmental systems that supply our existence are not measured and environmental disasters are measured as growth in the GDP not as a deficit. War, disease, natural disasters, basically all bad is growth and all nature is discounted as irrelevant. Work unless performed in institutionalized form is worthless where sitting around stealing the wealth of the common man and woman is valued. She proposed using time as the basis of calculating value and sharing the resources based on that, such as child care and first response health care which are mostly provided by the women of the world whose labour and time are considered useless to the well being of a country as it is not a part of the GDP. Women's work is useless, arms sales is valuable. War is good, peace is bad as peace does not add massive amounts of so called growth to the GDP. She also mentions the vested interest the US and other arms exporting countries have in maintaining war. It is a eye opening documentary from someone whom was a member of New Zealand government and was privy to how the system works.
